Health Care Aide (Casual On-Call)
Pay: CA$19.00-CA$21.00 per hour
Job Summary
We are seeking compassionate and professional Health Care Aides (HCAs) to join Nurtura Home Care Services in Edmonton and the surrounding areas. In this role, you will provide culturally responsive, client-centered, non-medical care, personal support, companionship, and respite services to individuals in their homes and community settings, including assisted living, hospice, and long-term care as needed.
The ideal candidate demonstrates empathy, professionalism, and strong communication and documentation skills. You bring practical expertise in safe mobility assistance, personal care, and medication support within scope, while delivering individualized care that honours each client’s cultural, spiritual, and personal preferences to promote comfort, dignity, safety, and quality of life.
Duties and Responsibilities

Provide personalized, client-centered care in the home or community that promotes dignity, comfort, and safety

Assist clients with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and mobility support

Offer companionship and emotional support to enhance mental and social well-being

Support clients and families through respite care, including dementia and chronic-condition support within scope

Prepare simple, nutritious meals and assist with feeding as required, respecting dietary and cultural preferences

Perform light housekeeping tasks such as tidying, laundry, and maintaining a safe, organized home environment

Accompany clients to appointments or community outings as a transportation escort (no driving of clients)

Run authorized errands on behalf of clients (e.g., grocery or prescription pick-up) in accordance with Nurtura’s reimbursement and documentation policy

Assist with safe transfers and use of mobility aids to prevent falls or injuries

Observe and promptly report changes in client condition, mood, or safety to Nurtura’s care coordinator

Complete accurate, objective, and timely shift and progress notes following each visit

Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism in all client interactions

Follow Nurtura’s core standards of care: empathy, cultural sensitivity, reliability, and respect for clients and their caregivers
Job Requirements

Health Care Aide (HCA) Certificate or equivalent education and training in personal support or community care
-
Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in home care, assisted living, nursing homes, hospice, or community support

Knowledge of senior care, dementia care, and working with individuals with disabilities is highly preferred
-
Current and clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check (issued within the past six months)

Valid certifications supporting care delivery, including Standard First Aid and CPR Level C; WHMIS and Safe Food Handling are considered strong assets

Certification or training in medication assistance

Proof of current Professional Liability Insurance (minimum $2,000,000 coverage)

Valid WCB (Workers’ Compensation Board) Clearance Letter confirming active coverage

Strong caregiving skills, patience, empathy, and excellent communication abilities

Ability to maintain accurate documentation and follow Nurtura’s confidentiality and reporting standards

Flexibility to accept on-call or short-notice shifts, including days, evenings, weekends, or respite coverage

Professional, reliable, and culturally sensitive with a genuine commitment to improving clients’ quality of life
